“We are all sleeping giants. The small changes now become giant changes in the future”
Welcome to the Sleeping Giant. This project started as a bursary that has become reality. In the last year Tom has developed a project that accepts the need for being creative in our approach to environmental awareness.
The premise here is “change through positive creative energy”.
Tom is working with local schools and and local community groups in Mayo for the Sleeping Giant, and there has been huge interest and support, with the giant capturing the imagination of kids, and when they see it there is such a sense of wonder.
The giant is made from biodegradable and environmentally sustainable materials, and can be disassembled for storage. Along with the giant is digital worksheet with instructions on how to make a recycled lanterns for the local group to make, to then be displayed with the giant.
“The whole approach to environmentalism can be multi-faceted. Socially-engaged arts is a way of connection the dots with other agencies in a cohesive and exciting way.”
The Sleeping Giant project partners include: The Arts Council, Creative Ireland, The National Parks & Wildlife Service & Mayo Dark Sky Park, Mayo County Council's Department of Environment, Climate Change & Agriculture, The Department of Education, and local community, arts and schools groups.
You can get in touch with Tom on his artist's page to find out how your and your community can involved in the Sleeping Giant project, or join our mailing list to keep up to date on upcoming community workshops and events.
Mayo's Sleeping Giant will be launched at the Mayo Dark Sky Festival 2025.
